Western Teaberry..Gaultheria ovatifolia..

Family: Ericaceae   Species: Gaultheria ovatifolia.

Perennial groundcover shrub with bell shaped flowers bearing light minty flavoured bright red edible fruits in Autumn

after Spring/Summer flowering.  Leaves and branches are used in herbal tea.

Surface sowing Autumn in moist  well drained part shaded acidic soil. Height 10-15cm  by 30cm spread.

  2. Gaultheria are amazingly hardy little plants. I love them and we have a most elusive seed company here in Tassie called “Phoenix Seeds”. They sell rare and strange seeds but you have to send away to an address for a paper catalogue, they don’t have an online presence and it’s all “old school” dealing with them. I might have to buy some seed now that I see how pretty they are :). Cheers for sharing. I love it when “pretty” is coupled with “useful food plant”, a win-win situation 🙂
